At BarCamp London 2, the resounding conclusion from the somewhat jokey "RDF vs. microformats" panel was that the Semantic Web needs better marketing. Afterwards, in some haste, Tom Hughes-Croucher and Tom Morris set out to start some kind of movement to market a slightly heavier version of microformats and some of the philosophical underpinnings of the Semantic Web. We coined the not particularly original phrase 'macroformats' and started spreading the meme. The microformats folks rightly took issue with this and so the name was swiftly changed. We like the microformats vision too much to annoy its proponents.
